‘Wearable Sculptures’

My collection is a study on shapes and finding new ways to make clothes. I wanted to make clothes that could also be presented as sculptures. For this I created a new technique, using a half-size dummy that I covered and shaped with clay. I transferred the shapes to paper and digitalised the patterns to be full size. The idea for the shapes came from cocoons in nature. I’m fascinated by the idea that the cocoon is generally labelled as ugly, yet it beholds something really beautiful and fragile inside of it. Like a butterfly. I also studied the works of Berlinde de Bruyckere. I explored the most beautiful setting that a woman can be in: A bride at her own wedding. I focused on the 60s bridal wear. I also included mourning wear.
