Silent Voice

The work investigates how Christian symbolism is used in communication. It includes shapes, colours and symbols done in different techniques stemming from Christianity. "Silent Voice" is a question asked without a voice because it brings up emotions and personal experiences one has from religion and God.

Traditional liturgical garments that are used in church are transformed to a modern collection by adding sporty elements such as soccer scarves and sweat pants. Collars have verses from the Lord's prayer, the black hoodie is covered in 2000 crystals, and the white outfit is covered in golden symbols of the Trinity.

The goal was to create a holy atmosphere by using the experiences I have had with Christianity throughout my childhood, as my dad worked as a pastor. This collection expresses what Christianity is to me; it is my own experience executed in a meaningful way.

Elina Äärelä is one of the recipients of the joint Exhibition Prize 2021. Her collection will be featured as part of the exhibition Future Nordic Fashion at the art museum Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm, 24 April-3 October.
