Floats

With a series of knitted dresses, finalist Emma Gudmundson tests the boundaries of the domestic knitting machine. In the creative process of fashion, the tool that produces the fabric is often just a means to an end. The sketching, colouring and creation of form are developed through processes that are separated from the machine. With her work “Floats”, Gudmundson, a graduate of The Swedish School of Textiles, shows how the domestic knitting machine can be both the central part of the design development and the final result. In doing so, she presents a better understanding of the actual work. The outcome is a series of hand-sewn, zero-waste and figure-hugging silhouettes made with intricate fabrics that create a 3-D surface with an organic yet futuristic look.

Emma Gudmundson has been selected by Ida Petersson, Buying Director at Browns Fashion, to create a collection that will be sold exclusively with the London-based boutique.
