The creative team at MM6 Margiela, helmed by Heikki Salonen, selected Kaapo Sinvero for a paid internship at the Paris studio. The members of the team “were impressed by Kaapo’s custom developed fabrics applied to exaggerated silhouettes, utilising an unconventional approach to texture and colour. Kaapo’s thought-provoking research mixes cultural references with an eye for fabrication and contemporary functionality and we are excited to provide the opportunity to work together in the MM6 team,” says the team.
Eschewing fashion’s penchant for the extraordinary, Kaapo Sinervo’s work springs from everyday commuting in cold and grim Helsinki in the autumn and winter. The Aalto graduate references specifically Finnish working culture and his personal observations on public transportation, on train and metro stations during morning rush hours. Using his insider perspective on the ordinary and what’s commonly disapproved, found funny or awkward in Finnish working and commuting culture and their various visual codes, Sinervo’s research is materialised into a collection that straddles functional clothing and more formal office wear. The result is a fusion of bulky silhouettes that look undone and “on the go” with seam taping, wind and waterproof garments and weather resistant solutions throughout. The woven fabrics are wool, cotton suit and traditional shirt fabrics, most of them upcycled or found in his family’s cottage barn. All knitwear is hand-knitted or machine knitted in upcycled yarns or using designer’s grandmother’s old, unused yarns. The collection offers puffy silhouettes, filled garments and quilting as well as transformable garments.
