MA-graduate of Aalto, Yu-Chen Lin explores the beauty in imperfection, drawing inspiration from the Japanese philosophies of wabi-sabi, sashiko and kintsugi. Set against the backdrop of the harsh yet beautiful Finnish winter, the collection investigates resilience and transformation, reinterpreting imperfection as a source of inherent beauty. Fragile woven and knitted fabrics of fine wool and polyester are mended with unconventional materials like monofilament, glass beads, buttons, and plastic tubes - each repair inspired by the textures of the Finnish winter landscape. Texture, colour and form are carefully chosen to contribute to the narrative of resilience and renewal. Lin’s collection transcends traditional fashion design, inviting viewers to appreciate the inherent beauty in imperfection and to engage in a dialogue about personal empowerment through the artistry of visible mending.
